Backyard Hummingbird Nest

While the snow was trying to fall for the second time this week, I sat in this cozy Backyard Hummingbird EcoNest that is every bit as beautiful as it's story. . .

A few years ago, Ursula and Marvin – living in Georgia – were looking to purchase a home in Ashland. Having missed out on a couple of other opportunities because of the competitive market, when their current home came on the market, they jumped at the chance and made an offer, site unseen. From the photos, they knew that this home was exactly what they were looking for . . . an historic bungalow within walking distance of downtown on a big lot bordering a park and walking path. From the photos, there was something they thought they didn’t want: an unfinished EcoNest backyard nest. Ursula took one look at the photo showing a small building that had “grass” growing out of the straw walls and thought it was some type of goat house. She said, “I don’t know what kind of strange Ashland nonsense that is, but it will have to go.” She described the small outbuilding as being in the awkward, teenager with braces phase of construction. After closing on the property and getting settled into the main house, Ursula contacted EcoNest to ask about their goat shed. She visited Robert and Paula’s home and learned more about EcoNests and their in-progress building. She says, “Once we realized it wasn’t a goat house, we wanted to finish it with integrity. We fell in love with the EcoNest concept and Robert and Paula were so helpful throughout our process. Our nest is such a treasure and has a wonderful, peaceful soul.” They spent about a year and a half researching and deciding how to finish it. The result is amazing - the clay plaster, exposed timbers, window seat with a view, and earthen floor provide a peaceful, inspiring space to work, read, or just be.
